Since its inception Stijl Consultancy has had a history of success in gaining planning approval, often in circumstances where other professionals have failed to gain planning approval on behalf of the client.

Successful applications made by us on behalf of our clients include:

The Superpharmacy

Stijl was approached by the client a respected local pharmacist, after an architect had not been able to produce a successful design for the enlargement of his premises.  Stijl made the successful planning application for the demolition and enlargement of an established pharmacy in a busy shopping parade.  The successful application enabled our client to more than treble his retail floor area whilst providing other services to the locality such as a travel clinic,  delivering medical supplies to local nursing homes and support services for recovering substance abusers.  Not only did the client gain his vastly improved pharmacy premises, but he was also able to build 9 one-bedroom flats above the pharmacy providing much needed local rented accommodation.  These flats were built to very high environmental standards and even include an indoor cycle park for residents.

From factory to business centre

Our client had purchased a disused factory building which he wished to demolish and turn into a modern business centre providing low-cost office accommodation to small local businesses and voluntary organisations.  Despite the local policy against the loss of industrial premises, we were able to make representations to the local authority on the client’s behalf about the impossibility of marketing the near derelict factory premises to a new tenant.  The local authority accepted the policy put forward by Stijl on behalf of this client and after discussion about the design of the new building, granted planning permission for the new business centre..

Extension to Surrey orthodontists’ surgery

Our client, an orthodontist, came to Stijl after two failed attempts to extend his surgery, which offered NHS orthodontic treatment to children, teenagers and adults for a large area.  The local authority had refused permission on the grounds that the orthodontists’ surgery was not an appropriate use in a residential area.  After reviewing the past planning application and the published national policy that encourages the retention of health care facilities in residential areas close to patients, Stijl engaged a partner architect and made a new application stressing the policy about retention of health care facilities. We also advised the client about the effective presentation of the application to the local authority to counter local objections. The local authority accepted our arguments and, despite stiff opposition from some neighbours, granted planning permission.

Extension and conversion of single house to flats in Conservation Area

Our client, a property developer, approached Stijl after purchasing a detached house in a Conservation Area.  He appreciated the difficulties that working in a Conservation Area can pose to developers.  Stijl engaged a partner architect and after initial discussions with the local authority,  made a successful application for the conversion of the house into 3 one bedroom and 2 two bedroom flats.   Stijl also advised the client about the presentation of a planning application in a sensitive area and lobbied on his behalf to ensure a successful outcome to his application.
